Save our Waterways

As you will see from our Canals section we are very keen on the canals and waterways of Britain. We were therefore very concerned to learn that British Waterways (BW) is having its government grant slashed and is having to make 180 people redundant. So what has BW done to deserve this?

Nothing. Nothing at all. Not a sausage. B*gger all. Their only crime is to be governed by the DEFRA (Dept for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs). DEFRA have mismanaged payments to farmers and so been penalised by the EU. So they are cutting funding to other areas that they are supposedly in charge of. Now what may seem like peanuts in the context of overall government spending is serious stuff for the waterways.

The canals are part of our national heritage and we need to fight for them.

PS: Just noticed an item in the local paper where DEFRA have twice failed to turn up to court hearings about some trees that were (allegedly) felled without permission. Because DEFRA didn't turn up, they automatically lost the case (so if the felling was wrong, they got away with it) and had costs (about £650) awarded against them. Guess who is going to have to pay for that??
