Builders came in two weeks before the Easter break to get the dining room and kitchen windows converted to doors before the break to allow construction of the deck.
The calm before the storm
The decking area before any work starts. Kids old swing and tatty plants in evidence
Work starts
Starting to get the rendering off the lower part of the wall to make fixing the deck easier later on. Forward planning!
The kitchen window before the work starts.
End of Day 1
Patio door (ex dining room window) in place wating for the concrete round the edges to go off. Quick work!
Pile of bricks outside salvaged from ex-dining room wall which we will use to support the new deck joists.
The garden as seen through the new patio door. Beautiful!
Bit of making good needed.
New patio door seen from outside. Wood in foreground will be the new deck.

The three new windows / doors.
Tiles going back up round new kitchen door.
Had a phone call today (Saturday) to say builders back Tuesday to carry one with the rest of the windows. With luck all done by Easter!
Trial layout of decking materials to judge levels.

Soleplates supported on brick pillars.
Joists sit on the soleplates and the decking on the joists.
The finished deck! No photos during the build due to camera problems.
The work on the windows sparked off a frenzy of redecorating starting with the kids sitting room.
Followed by the bathroom...
Followed by the master bedroom....
and finally (for now) Andrew's office. Whew!
Here's the deck near the end of the summer with nasturtiums going mad and steps in place.
