After a lot of research and seeing how much work would be involved in trying to DIY, we went ahead and arranged for a local firm to completely redesign our bathroom. here is what it looked like before the work started. The missing tiles and bath panels were a result of some of the research!
Boiler and old style small white tiles

Electric shower over blue bath with shower curtain

Blue sink under the window

In just one day they had stripped the old bathroom, put in the plumbing for the new bath. built a new ceiling and the back of the new shower enclosure!
Door off and tiles stripped

Sink removed and tiles stripped

Shower enclosure structure under way

New false ceiling built

Plumbing to bath laid in

Plastering done today.
Wall by boiler plastered and shower plumbing laid in

Wall by door plastered ready for tiling

Tiles have arrived

New false ceiling plastered as well

Today (Thursday) was our last day on site while the work was going on. Tiling started today
Tiles up in shower enclosure area

Tiling started on wall by door. NB bath is not in final position here.

We then went off on a week on our canal boat (report here)and left the work to carry on without us. Quite a relief to be able to get a shower. The novelty of sponge baths at the kitchen sink soon wore off! So we arrived back the following Friday to find the workmen putting the finishing touches to the work. It looks great!!
Things to notice in the following photos include walk-in shower enclosure, shorter bath to suit AJS, mixer on the bath taps for easy hair rinsing, big mirror, downlighters, extractor fan & lots of cupboard space

A few bits left to do such as a missing cupboard door. And we need to arrange for the flooring. But the rest is fully functional!
